We all should be aware of this issue of hunger in America. No child should have to go without eating. They never asked to be here so why should they suffer. According to the documentary, “A Place at the Table,” one in six American people face hunger as an everyday struggle and millions of families that aren’t hungry are at risk of hunger. They also state that 22.5 percent of children are experiencing food insecurity, and that needs to end. To people on the outside looking in, the welfare and SNAP (The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) seems like a crutch. You never see the whole picture until you need them. For whatever your reason may be, your family shouldn’t go hungry because you are a couple of dollars or cents over the required guidelines. It is not true that everyone on welfare is abusing the system or will be home doing nothing for the rest of their lives. Now, there are some who do, but that should not take from the ones that really need the help. There should be better screening of recipients and more education about healthy eating, money management, and other charities that are helpful.
In the Movie, “A PLACE AT THE TABLE,” Rosie’s family had seven members, and half worked a minimum wage job. They got up and went to work every day, but that still wasn’t enough to feed their family. Rosie was still going to school hungry in the morning. She imagined her friends as hams sandwiches and her teacher as a banana. This kept her distracted from doing her work. Rosie’s mother tried to get public assistance multiple times, but was a couple of cents over the required income amount. That wasn’t fair, but if Rosie’s mother knew about other charities than she could have tried them. The local church found out about this family and started bringing food to them. According to feedAmerica.org there are 3.9 million families that are going through this same situation.
There are a lot of misconceptions about what type of people depend on assistance programs and food banks. Upper and middle class citizens think that the people who depend on these programs are not working, are lazy, choose not to work, are of certain descent, or just have kids to get more government money. In fact, as stated in the movie, “A Place at the Table,” many of America’s public assistance recipients are hard working adults that may work one or more minimum wage jobs, disabled people, or retired seniors who cannot get their ends to meet. It was also stated in the movie that 20% of welfare recipients are working single parents, 25% are elderly, 42% are disabled, and the other 12% are other adults. The government should start a screening process to make sure that the recipients are really eligible. It should be made sure that these other people are doing something productive with themselves. A drug test once in a while wouldn’t hurt either. No one should be doing drugs but if those “BROKE” people don’t have enough money to feed their family, but have enough money to buy drugs then they shouldn’t be helped.
From my experience of working in a shelter, I know that there are so many other programs, nonprofit organizations, and charities that can help needy families if they only knew about them. Maybe, if caseworkers had this information on hand to give their clients, then there would be a lot less hungry people. As claimed by United Way Nonprofit Organization there is 961,718 public charities in the United States and 96,604 private foundations. Why aren’t they being used? Because the message is not getting around that they even exist. Providing information about these other programs could educate, help, and inform those that are already trying to help themselves and their families. As part of the new government program, educate these families on how to manage their money, how to shop for food, and/or how to cook more healthy foods. Get experts to come in and volunteer their time to help also. With the right education anything is possible. Hold classes and make the families take them. Education is the key to a better world. In these classes you can offer incentives, prizes, and games to make the people want to come. Offer childcare so that the students and teachers can stay focus and won’t be distracted. Have a family cooking night were the families make a healthy inexpensive meal together. Try to do as much as possible without spending a lot of money. If we as a unit can learn to be better people than we probably would have a better world.
No one should ever rely on charity 100% to feed their family forever. This is why I say that more education and better screening should be sufficient enough. If people solely rely on others to help and do things for them all the time, then they would never know how to provide for their self. The word welfare means “the good fortune, health, happiness, and prosperity’ according to dictionary.com. The start to ending hunger in American should start by working towards a system that can figure out who really needs assistance and how their specific needs can be met.
